Guardianship

There are times when families are faced with issues regarding individuals who are minors, are disabled or are of limited capacity. In such cases, there are actions that can be taken to assist and protect these individuals.

A guardian is an individual legally appointed by the court to take care of and manage the affairs of another person, known as a ward, who is incapable of managing their affairs usually due to incapacity, disability or who are minors. A guardian is typically appointed to make personal decisions about such things as the ward’s health and welfare. An appointment of a guardian can be limited in nature. By seeking a limited appointment this provides the ward with personal liberty to make decisions about some things, which they are capable of making. The responsibilities of a Guardian can vary based upon the individual circumstances of the ward.

The court can appoint a Temporary Guardian, which may eventually lead to a permanent appointment.
